Stories Behind the Campus

Graham Commons

Six Years of Showing Up

On September 12, 2026, the streets of Graham, North Carolina, filled with something that is difficult to put into words.

Families. First responders. Children. Veterans. Runners and walkers. Volunteers and neighbors.

Along the highway, members of the community stood together as cars passed and drivers sounded their horns in support.

It was the 25th Anniversary 9/11 Commemorative 5K, hosted by City of Graham Parks & Recreation and the City of Graham Fire Department — bringing a community together to remember those we lost, honor those who answered the call, and stand beside the families who continue to carry their legacy.

For Children of Fallen Heroes, this year’s event represented something more.

It marked six years of friendship and partnership with the City of Graham and its community.

And now, that relationship will become a permanent part of our future.

Six Years of Showing Up

For six years, the City of Graham has welcomed Children of Fallen Heroes into something very special.

Through the leadership and dedication of City of Graham Parks & Recreation and the City of Graham Fire Department, this annual event has grown into far more than a 5K.

It has become a tradition of remembrance and community.

The Graham Police Department, Alamance County Sheriff’s Office, first responders, city employees, volunteers, businesses, families and residents have all played a role in making these gatherings meaningful year after year.

But perhaps the most powerful part has always been the community itself.

People come out.

They volunteer.

They run and walk.

They bring their children.

They stand along the roadway.

They wave American flags.

They sound their horns.

They remember.

That’s what makes this partnership special.

It wasn’t created with a single handshake or sponsorship.

It was built through six years of showing up for one another.

Twenty-Five Years Later

Twenty-five years after September 11, 2001, Graham once again came together in remembrance.

Seeing first responders, families and children together was a reminder that remembrance isn’t only about looking backward.

It’s also about what we teach the next generation.

We teach them the names.

We tell them the stories.

We show them what service looks like.

And we show them that when tragedy changes a family’s life, their community doesn’t disappear.

We stay.

That belief is at the heart of Children of Fallen Heroes.

From One Community to 82 Acres of Possibility

Children of Fallen Heroes is building a permanent home on 82 acres in North Carolina — America’s Campus for the Next Generation.

It will be a place where young people can learn, explore and discover what they’re capable of through STEAM education, aviation, drones, outdoor experiences, agriculture, equine programs, adaptive recreation, culinary education, mentorship and much more.

As we began imagining the different spaces that will make up this campus, we realized something important:

The communities that helped us reach this moment should be part of its story.

There was one community we knew belonged here.

Graham.

Introducing Graham Commons

In recognition of six years of partnership, friendship and unwavering community support, Children of Fallen Heroes will name a special area of our campus:

GRAHAM COMMONS

Graham Commons will be more than a name on a sign.

It will represent what can happen when a community decides to stand beside children and families — and keeps showing up year after year.

As thousands of young people eventually experience this campus, they will see the name Graham Commons and have an opportunity to learn the story behind it.

A story that began miles away.

A story built by firefighters, Parks & Recreation staff, police officers, sheriff’s deputies, city employees, volunteers, families, runners, walkers, businesses and neighbors.

A story about a North Carolina community that chose to remember our nation’s heroes by investing in the next generation.

A Piece of Graham Will Always Be Here

There will come a day when children who weren’t even born when this partnership began are running across these 82 acres.

They may fly a drone for the first time.

Learn something in a STEAM program that changes the direction of their life.

Ride a horse.

Explore a trail.

Discover aviation.

Meet a mentor.

Make a new friend.

Or simply realize that there are people who believe in them.

And somewhere in the middle of all of it will be Graham Commons.

A permanent reminder that this campus wasn’t built by one organization.

It was built through relationships.

Through communities.

Through people willing to show up.

Now, Graham becomes part of our home.
