The Dempsey Story: A Path of Resilience
From a hug in 2018 to a path being created for the lives still ahead.
In 2018, Children of Fallen Heroes met Courtney Dempsey at an event in Raeford, North Carolina.
We did not know her story that day.
Courtney was standing near a display of handmade jewelry created from stainless-steel shell casings. She would pick up a piece, look at it, put it back, and return to it again.
Someone from Children of Fallen Heroes noticed.
The piece was purchased for her.
What followed was a hug and a simple promise:
“You are family now. We are here for the long term.”
Only later did we understand how much was behind that moment.
Courtney’s father, U.S. Army Major Daniel “Danny” Dempsey, had died by suicide years earlier.
His loss changed the course of a family, but it did not end their story.
Over the years, we have had the privilege of watching Courtney move forward.
She graduated from college. She built friendships. She grew in confidence. The young woman we first met in 2018 continued stepping into a life shaped by loss, but not defined by it.
Her mother, Caitlin, continued moving forward too.
She carried the responsibility of raising a family through grief while creating a new chapter of life.
She later remarried a veteran who became an extraordinary source of love, stability, and mentorship for Courtney and the children.
He did not replace the father they lost.
He stepped forward and loved the family that remained.
That is what resilience can look like.
Not forgetting.
Not replacing.
Not pretending the past did not happen.
But continuing to build.
A Path Forward
In 2027, Children of Fallen Heroes plans to begin developing a cross-country course at America’s Campus for the Next Generation in honor of Major Daniel Dempsey and dedicated to suicide-prevention awareness.
The course will lead to a Tree of Life.
The vision is not to create a place centered only on loss.
It is to create a place centered on life.
A trail where veterans can run.
Where first responders can walk.
Where surviving families can gather.
Where children carrying grief can understand that their future is still being written.
And where educators, researchers, community leaders, veterans, families, and prevention partners can come together around resilience, connection, trauma, grief, and the importance of reaching people before darkness becomes isolation.
The Tree of Life will stand at the end of that path as a living reminder that loss may forever change a family without ending its story.
Courtney’s journey reflects that.
Caitlin’s journey reflects that.
The family they have continued building reflects that.
What began with a piece of jewelry and a hug in 2018 will become something permanent on this land.
A place to remember Major Daniel Dempsey.
A place to honor the family that carried forward.
And a place created for the person who may one day walk that trail needing to know one thing:
