Empowering Young Heroes: Inspiring Through Badges & Books
Children of Fallen Heroes + Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office
Badges & Books is built around a simple idea: when children have positive experiences with the men and women who serve their communities, those moments can make a lasting difference.
Through the program, law enforcement officers visit elementary school classrooms and spend time reading with students from kindergarten through fourth grade. The books carry positive, age-appropriate messages while giving children an opportunity to meet officers not during an emergency, but in their classrooms, surrounded by teachers, friends, books, and learning.
Children of Fallen Heroes supports these visits by providing books for officers to share and donating books to elementary school libraries and community outreach programs.
More Than a Book
Literacy opens doors.
Books help children build vocabulary, imagination, confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong connection to learning. But Badges & Books is about something more.
It is about relationships.
A uniform can represent authority. Through a child’s eyes, it can also represent a mentor, a neighbor, a role model, and someone who believes in them.
By bringing law enforcement officers and young students together through reading, Badges & Books creates an opportunity for children to experience public service in a positive and personal way.
Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office
Children of Fallen Heroes is proud to continue growing Badges & Books through our work with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
This collaboration brings deputies directly into the lives of young people through literacy, conversation, encouragement, and community engagement.
The goal isn’t simply to read a book.
It is to help a child build self-confidence, develop a love of learning, understand the importance of service, and begin imagining what they can become.
One book. One conversation. One positive role model.
Sometimes that is where inspiration begins.
A Program That Continues to Grow
Badges & Books is becoming part of a larger Children of Fallen Heroes commitment to connect first responders, educators, families, and young people.
The program has included work with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office and is expanding through partnerships with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, Southern Pines Police Department, and additional law enforcement and community partners.
Every new department, school, classroom, officer, and donated book gives us another opportunity to reach the next generation.
This is community. This is mentorship. This is Badges & Books.
Help Us Put More Books Into More Hands
Individuals, businesses, nonprofits, civic organizations, and community partners can help Badges & Books grow. Support can help provide books for officers to read, books for school libraries, and resources that allow Children of Fallen Heroes and participating law enforcement agencies to reach more classrooms and communities.
Together, we can promote literacy while creating something equally important: positive relationships between young people and those who have chosen a life of service.
